Our Background and Beliefs

City Year was founded in 1988 by Michael Brown and Alan Khazei, then-roommates at Harvard Law School, who both felt strongly that young people in service could be a powerful resource for addressing some of America's most pressing issues. They built City Year with the belief that each one of us has the power to make a difference in the world, and they were right. Since our inception, City Year has promoted the vision of service as a real opportunity for citizens all around the world to do something good within their communities. It's through that service that we're able to demonstrate the power and idealism of young people, engage students and citizens to achieve a common goal, and mold the leaders of the next generation.

At City Year, we believe education has the power to help every child reach his or her potential. However, in high-poverty communities there are external factors and obstacles students are faced with every day that can interfere with their ability to both get to school and be ready and able to learn.

At City Year, we're working to bridge the gap in high-poverty communities between the support that students actually need, and what their schools are designed and resourced to provide. In doing so, we're helping to increase graduation rates across the country, and changing the lives of the students we serve.

They serve as our guide, and they constantly empower us to stay true to ourselves through changing times as we work to achieve our mission of keeping more students in school and on track to graduation.
